Nudism (or Naturism) was perhaps started in Canada by a religious sect called the Doukhobors. They had migrated from Russia to western Canada and practised occasional nudity, such as while working in the farm fields. One group of Doukhobors, known as the Freedomites, used strip publicly in the 1900s in mass public demonstrations to protest against government policies which were meant to assimilate them.
The first naturist club to open in Canada was the Van Tan Club in 1939 and continues today in North Vancouver, BC.
